Physical Therapy for Shoulder Pain

shoulder

Shoulder pain can make everyday activities like reaching overhead, lifting, getting dressed, or sleeping comfortably more difficult. Whether your symptoms developed gradually or followed an injury, understanding what’s contributing to your pain is an important first step toward recovery.

At Altius Physical Therapy, we provide individualized treatment for shoulder pain, helping patients improve mobility, strength, and function so they can return to their normal activities.

Common Shoulder Conditions We Treat

Shoulder pain can develop from a variety of conditions, including tendon-related problems, joint stiffness, instability, and injuries associated with repetitive activity or sports.

Some of the conditions we commonly treat include:

  • Rotator cuff injuries and tendinopathy: Pain or weakness associated with rotator cuff irritation, degeneration, or tears.

  • Shoulder impingement and subacromial pain: Discomfort with reaching, lifting, or overhead movements.

  • Frozen shoulder (adhesive capsulitis): Progressive shoulder stiffness and restricted range of motion that can interfere with everyday activities.

  • Shoulder arthritis: Joint pain, stiffness, and functional limitations associated with degenerative changes.

  • Labral injuries and shoulder instability: Pain, weakness, or a feeling of instability following injury or repetitive activity.

  • Post-surgical shoulder conditions: Rehabilitation following rotator cuff repair, labral repair, shoulder replacement, and other orthopedic procedures.

Our Approach to Shoulder Pain Treatment

Not all shoulder pain has the same cause, and treatment shouldn’t be based on symptoms alone.

Your evaluation may include assessment of shoulder and cervical mobility, strength, joint function, and the movements or activities that reproduce your symptoms. We also look at how your shoulder blade, upper back, and surrounding muscles contribute to movement.

Depending on your condition, treatment may include:

  • Progressive strengthening to improve rotator cuff and shoulder function

  • Hands-on manual therapy when appropriate

  • Mobility exercises to address stiffness and restricted movement

  • Movement retraining to improve control during reaching, lifting, and overhead activities

  • Activity modifications to help manage symptoms while maintaining appropriate movement

  • Functional strengthening to prepare for work, exercise, and sports

Our goal is to improve your ability to use your shoulder comfortably while addressing the limitations affecting your daily life.

Getting Back to What You Enjoy

For some patients, the goal is sleeping comfortably, reaching into a cabinet, or getting dressed without pain. For others, it’s returning to weightlifting, tennis, golf, swimming, or other recreational activities.

At Altius, we tailor rehabilitation to your symptoms, activity level, and goals, adjusting treatment as your shoulder improves.

Whether you’re dealing with persistent shoulder discomfort or recovering from an injury, we’ll work with you to develop a plan that fits your needs.
