Graston Technique & Soft Tissue Mobilization

graston

Sometimes, pain and movement restrictions involve more than just weakness or joint stiffness. Muscles, tendons, and other soft tissues can become sensitive or difficult to move comfortably, particularly following an injury, surgery, or periods of reduced activity.

At Altius Physical Therapy, we’re certified Graston Technique providers. We use this hands-on treatment as one of several tools to help address soft tissue restrictions and improve movement when appropriate for your condition.

What Is the Graston Technique?

Graston Technique is a form of instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization (IASTM). It uses specially designed stainless steel instruments that allow us to apply controlled pressure and movement to muscles, tendons, and surrounding soft tissues.

The technique may help reduce symptoms and improve short-term mobility in certain patients. It’s typically used alongside therapeutic exercise and other rehabilitation techniques rather than as a treatment on its own.

When Might We Use Graston Technique?

Depending on your condition, we may incorporate instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization into treatment for:

  • Muscle strains and soft tissue injuries

  • Tendinopathies and overuse-related pain

  • Certain areas of postoperative soft tissue restriction, once healing allows

  • Muscle tightness and mobility limitations

  • Movement restrictions associated with some orthopedic conditions

Graston isn’t necessary or appropriate for every patient. We consider your medical history, symptoms, tissue healing, and response to treatment before deciding whether to include it.

What to Expect During Treatment

During a session, we use specialized instruments to apply controlled strokes over selected areas of soft tissue. You may feel pressure or mild discomfort, depending on the region being treated and the sensitivity of the tissue.

Temporary redness or soreness can occur. We adjust the technique to your comfort level and avoid areas where treatment may be inappropriate.

At Altius, hands-on care is part of a larger rehabilitation process. When we use Graston Technique, we typically combine it with exercise, mobility work, and progressive strengthening to help you build on improvements made during treatment.
