Recovering from surgery can be challenging. Whether you’ve had a joint replacement, ligament reconstruction, or another orthopedic procedure, knowing what to expect and how to safely progress through recovery can make a meaningful difference.
At Altius Physical Therapy, we understand that every surgery and recovery process is different. We take the time to understand your procedure, your surgeon’s instructions, and what you’re hoping to get back to doing. Our goal is to guide you through each stage of rehabilitation with a clear plan, hands-on care, and the personal attention you deserve.
We provide post-surgical rehabilitation for a wide range of orthopedic procedures, including:
Total knee and hip replacements
Rotator cuff and other tendon repairs
Shoulder and hip labral repairs
ACL reconstruction and other ligament surgeries
Meniscus repairs and related knee procedures
Spinal procedures, including microdiscectomy and lumbar fusion
Fracture fixation and related orthopedic surgeries
Foot and ankle surgeries, including bunionectomy
The rehabilitation process can vary significantly depending on the procedure, surgical technique, healing timelines, and individual patient needs. We work within your surgeon’s guidelines while tailoring treatment to your recovery and functional goals.
Successful recovery requires more than following a standard exercise program. We consider where you are in the healing process, what you’re currently able to do, and how your progress compares with the expectations for your particular procedure.
Depending on your surgery and stage of recovery, your evaluation and treatment may focus on:
Pain and swelling management
Restoring joint mobility and range of motion
Improving muscle strength and endurance
Walking mechanics and gait training
Balance and coordination
Scar mobility and soft tissue restrictions when appropriate
Functional activities such as stairs, transfers, lifting, and reaching
Gradual progression toward work, exercise, and recreational activities
Treatment may combine hands-on manual therapy, therapeutic exercise, neuromuscular training, and functional movement activities as appropriate for your recovery.
We regularly reassess your progress and adjust your program as you regain mobility, strength, and confidence. Just as importantly, we’ll help you understand what to expect along the way, including precautions, activity restrictions, and how to manage your rehabilitation between visits.
Communication with your surgeon is an important part of post-surgical rehabilitation. Different procedures come with different precautions and progression timelines, and those guidelines need to be respected throughout recovery.
We review your surgeon’s postoperative instructions, monitor your progress, and communicate relevant updates when needed. If concerns arise or recovery isn’t progressing as expected, we’ll work with your surgical team to determine the appropriate next steps.
Our goal is to keep your rehabilitation coordinated, safe, and focused on meaningful progress.
Recovery looks different for everyone. For one patient, success may mean walking comfortably after a knee replacement. For another, it may mean returning to tennis after shoulder surgery, running after an ACL reconstruction, or simply getting back to work and daily activities without unnecessary limitations.
We take pride in knowing our patients personally and being part of their recovery from the early stages through their return to meaningful activities. We’ll work with you to establish realistic goals, celebrate progress, and navigate the challenges that can come with rehabilitation.
Whether your surgery is already scheduled or you’re beginning your recovery, we’re here to help you take the next step.
