Balance is a tricky thing. Falls among older adults and elderly seniors can lead to devastating injuries, such as hip fractures. According to the CDC, in 2019, 800,000 people were hospitalized and 34,000 deaths were caused by falls. 300,000 people suffered hip fractures, a dangerous injury for those that are elderly or suffer from osteoporosis.
Luckily, decreasing fall risk are very addressable in the physical therapy realm.
It’s important to find the contributors to lack of balance – Medications, systemic conditions such as low blood pressure, etc. Assessing confidence and mental state is also important, as fear of falling or keeping ones balance is also a large factor. Finally, strength and coordination play a vital role.
We assess your balance difficulties from a whole body perspective and using outcome measures throughout the process, work towards demonstrable improvement. We’ll work on your strength, endurance and challenge you to move outside your comfort zone (safely) so that you can build your confidence and reduce anxiety. We’ll ask about your home and what it will require to navigate around safely. We can also provide recommendations for assistive devices when needed, as well as training and tips to use them most effectively.
Overcoming fear and building strength can be a difficult process and we are here to lend a helping hand along the journey.
Our new office will be open to patients on January 2nd, 2023
